After e-BOSH, DOLE's OSHC to put up online Drug Abuse Prevention course

Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz yesterday welcomed the report of the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC), an attached agency of the Department of Labor and  Employment, that it will very soon offer Filipino workers an online course on drug prevention and abuse in the workplace.

"Following the very successful online course on Basic Occupational Safety and Health, or e-BOSH, the OSHC is developing an online course on drug prevention and abuse to enable more Filipino workers to learn prevention and control of drug abuse in their workplaces," Baldoz said.

"This will open up wider access to OSHC services which is good for our workers," she added.

OSHC Executive Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucueco, M.D. reported that the on-line course is a collaboration between the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), Family Wellness Center Foundation, Inc., and the OSHC.

“Our on-line Basic Occupational Safety and Health Course (e-BOSH) has been very successful. Aside from the growing number of graduates, we have been receiving positive feed back from learners on how this course provided them with much needed information on safety and health. So, we have been inspired to create this Appreciation Course on Drug-free Workplace for the Internet," Dr. Cucueco explained.

The on-line version of the Appreciation Course on Drug-Free Workplace is similar to the three-hour classroom training on the same course, and aims to respond to drug abuse problems experienced in various industries. The course also deals on how to implement the workplace provisions of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

In 2003, the DOLE has issued D.O. 53-03 Guidelines for a Drug-Free Workplace which contained provisions for education, training, drug testing program for officers and employees, treatment, rehabilitation and referral, monitoring and evaluation, as well as roles, rights and responsibilities of workers and management.

This is the basic guidelines that the DOLE, through the OSHC, enforces and implements for private sector companies all over the country.

Cucueco said learners of the online Appreciation Course on Drug-Free Workplace will be trained on the salient features of RA 9165 and its implementing rules and regulations (IRR); how to develop company policies and programs on drug-free workplace; adverse effects of abuse and misuse of dangerous drugs on the person, workplace, family and the community; and the preventive measures against drug abuse.
